Immune System

You’ve all heard of the term “Immune System”. Do you know what it is? Or how it works? Read below to know more about immunity, its effects, how it works and various immune boosters available.

An immune system is our body’s response and protective system against various alien substances that may have harmful effects on our general well-being. The very fundamental property of the immunity system is that no part of our body is cut off from its surveillance. It is spread throughout the body and involves various types of cells, organs, proteins, and tissues which work in harmony to keep the body healthy and away from illness. The immune system is highly capable of recognizing and terminating any abnormal cells. Ideally, it can distinguish between the self or own tissue and the foreign tissues, even the dead or faulty cells are recognized and cleared away by the immune system.

As the world is changing, with changes in daily practices, food intake, sleep patterns, general body activities, stress, environmental issues and many other external factors, our immune system seems to have taken a serious hit. It may require extra help to boost the immunity and offer protection against various diseases.

Immunity

The capability of our multicellular body to be resistant towards harmful microorganisms that may cause substantive damage to our body is called “immunity”. It is the protective state of the body to prevent the development of pathogenic microorganism and to counteract its effects. There are various immune boosters in the market to help you achieve just that.

According to biology, immunity maybe defined as “A balanced state of the body having adequate biological defence to fight against infections, diseases, allergies, and other unwanted biological invasions’’.

Immunity also mainly involves two components, i.e specific and nonspecific components. Nonspecific components are those that act as barriers or eliminators for various kinds of pathogens irrespective of their antigenic nature. Other components of the immune system adapt themselves to each new disease that may be encountered and generate a pathogen-specific immunity.

The immune system has two major sub-systems, i.e the innate and the adaptive sub-system –

The immune system also works in a layered manner where, at first the physical barriers prevent pathogens from entering the body, but if a pathogen is able to breach these barriers the innate immune system offers a non-specific but an immediate response. The innate system is found in all plants and animals. It is divided into two types: (a) Non-Specific innate immunity, a degree of resistance to all infections in general. (b) Specific innate immunity, a resistance to a particular kind of microorganism.

On the other hand, the adaptive immune system offers a second layer of protection and is activated by the innate response. It offers an advanced and improved response which is then retained after the pathogen has been eliminated, it is called the immunological memory. It helps the adaptive immune system to have a stronger counter attack each time this pathogen is found in the body. Adaptive immunity is further sub-divided depending on how the immunity is acquired, i.e naturally or artificially.

Types of Immunity

Two major types of immunity exist, i.e active and passive immunity.

1) Active immunity - Individuals rely more on it as it is created by our own immune system for protecting us from a pathogen.

2) Passive immunity – We are protected against pathogen by an immunity gained from someone else, thus called passive immunity. It is short-lived and does not last very long as the antibodies do not have a way to be continually replenished. Passive immunity includes maternal antibodies and Immunoglobulin treatments.

3) Community immunity - When a person is protected by those around him. There is indirect protection and does not involve physical components of immunity, such as antibodies. It is a state when a pathogen is less likely to infect a person because of the high numbers of protected people around him.

Things To Do To Help Boost Immunity System

There are a few things you can do naturally to boost immunity. Your first line of defence against fighting pathogens and boosting immunity is choosing a healthy lifestyle. Various lifestyle components such as the daily diet, exercise, age, psychological stress, as well as other environmental factors influence the immune system. Some healthy changes in your diet and routine can act as great immune boosters for your body. Here are some of the best ways to boost immunity naturally.

1) Go For A Healthy Diet – Your dietary intake will have a great effect on your immunity levels. Healthy food is a natural immune booster, it is also the most convenient as it is easily available. Consuming enough amount of vegetables, fruits, herbs and spices on a daily basis will offer necessary nutrients to the body to ensure that your immune system is strong enough to protect you against the virus infection. Many plant-based foods also have antiviral and antimicrobial properties, which help us fight off infection

2) Keep Stress Under Control – Nobody can escape feeling stressed, everyone gets stressed. Short bursts of stress may even help your immune system to function well, but lasting stress can have adverse effect on your immunity. Long-term stress leads to elevated levels of the steroid hormone cortisol. The body relies on cortisol during short-term bouts of stress (i.e when your body goes into “fight-or-flight” response). But if the cortisol levels are at a constant high, it blocks the immune system from doing its job, which is to protect the body against potential threats from germs like viruses and bacteria.

3) Lots Of Good Quality Sleep – Adequate sleep is highly necessary for a healthy immune response as your body is constantly working, it needs to heal and regenerate while you sleep. The body also produces cytokines (which is a protein that can help fight or promote inflammation), interleukin 12 (a pro-inflammatory cytokine) and T cells (white blood cells which helps regulate immune response). Sleep deprivation can cause the inflammatory immune response to activate, which in turn will reduce the activity of T cells in the body. This can weaken your immune system and also reduce the response of your body towards to vaccines.

4) Exercise On A Regular Basis – Another best way to boost immunity is to keep the body active. You can do so by exercising regularly as it may help lower the risk of developing chronic diseases (such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, or heart diseases). Exercising also increases the level of endorphins (hormones that help reduce pain & triggers a positive feeling in the body), exercising also helps with stress management.

5) Practice Moderation With Alcohol Intake – High alcohol intake can cause lowered immune function as your body gets too busy trying to detoxify your system to work on its normal immune system function.

6) Avoid Smoking – Keeping aside all the other harmful effects which smoking causes, it also impairs the immune system. Smoking has a negative impact on both, the adaptive as well as the innate immunity system. As smoking tampers with the immune system’s defence mechanism, it increases the chance of developing harmful pathogenic immune responses.

7) Consume Enough Vitamins - Consumption of vitamins can act as a perfect immune booster for your body. Vitamin A, B6, C, D and E increases the general strength of the immune system. Vitamin C is the most beneficial immune booster, it can be found in citrus fruits such as Oranges, Grapefruits, Spinach and Strawberries. You may also opt for multivitamin supplements as prescribed by your doctor. Step out in the early morning sun to absorb a good quantity of Vitamin D as it also helps produce antibodies to fight pathogens and viruses.

Types Of Immune Boosters

There are two ways to acquire active resistance against invading microbes. Immunity Boosters may be mainly of 2 types depending on how they have been acquired by the body, I.e –

Natural – Natural immunity boosters are those not processed and free from preservatives. They are readily present in your everyday lifestyle. It may include various fruits, vegetable, herbs, spices and much more. They are packed with anti-inflammatory, anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties which helps boost immunity and fight harmful pathogens.

Artificial – Immunity boosters are also available in artificial form, they are acquired or can be induced by a vaccines, medications, supplements etc, a substance that contains antigen. Artificial immune boosters usually work quicker but can have a short-termed immunization.

Immune Booster Benefits

Immunity is the main mechanism to host defence against infectious agents, such as pathogen, viruses etc. If you often fall sick, feel fatigued, are prone to viral infections or have other nagging symptoms, it may mean your immune system is weakened. A weakened immunity system is like a soldier without its guard, completely defenceless. This not only invites unnecessary harmful infection but also makes you highly prone to a number of adverse health effects.

Here are a few benefits of immune boosters –

1) Helps manage stress – If your immunity is at a healthy level, it will help manage stress and well as prevent effect of stress. As stress decreases the body’s lymphocytes (white blood cells that help fight infection), having a good immunity can prevent the reduction of WBCs which are invested in managing the elevated levels of the steroid hormone cortisol caused due to stress.

2) Protection from viral infections such as cold, cough etc – It is perfectly normal for adults to get cold a few times in a year, but if you see that the occurrence is increasing or the cold won’t run its course, that is a clear sign that your immunity is not at a healthy level and you need immune boosters. The boosters help develop antibodies in the bodies to fight off germs, viruses or infections.

3) Prevent constant stomach related issues – Frequent digestive issues such as diarrhoea, gas or constipation, are also a sign that your immunity is compromised. More than 70% of the immunity system is located in your digestive tract, it also includes the beneficial bacteria and microorganisms which protect against infections. Immune boosters benefit the gut by offering protection and helping with viruses, chronic inflammation and even autoimmune disorders.

4) Helps heal wounds – Every time you get hurt, a burn, cut or scrape your skin goes into damage control mode. The body sends nutrient-rich blood to the injury to help regenerate new skin. But this process of healing depends entirely on healthy immune cell. Immune Boosters thus help regenerate skin quickly, which would not be possible if the immunity levels were low.

5) Prevents from being prone to frequent infections - If you are battling with infections too often than regular, it is sign that your immune system is not working at its best. For eg. Ear, Throat infections etc. Immune boosters help in keeping infections at bay by improving the body’s defence mechanism.

Immune Booster For Kids

Small children are especially vulnerable to various illnesses as their immune system is yet to mature completely. Kids are more prone to viral infections as their body’s defence is not as strong as that of an adult. For infants, they get their immunity from the mother’s immune system which protect the infant with antibodies that were shared through the placenta immediately after birth. Those antibodies stay active for the first few weeks of a baby’s life. You can help boost immunity in kids by providing a healthy diet which includes fruits, vegetables, nuts, pulses and various grains.
