Why do we Celebrate Diwali?

Diwali is also known as Diwali, Divali, Deepavali or Dipavali which denotes the beginning of the New Year according to the Hindu calendar. Celebrated for five consecutive days, it acknowledges the return of Lord Rama from 14 years of exile.

Legend has it that the people of Ayodhaya commemorated the return of Lord Rama (King of Ayodhaya), when he defeated Ravana (demon king of Lanka) by adorning the whole kingdom with diyas.

Diyas are traditional clay lamps which are lit in homes and are decorated with colorful artwork known as Rangoli, which are artistic patterns drawn on the floor with colored rice or powder.

When do we celebrate Diwali?

Depending on the Hindu lunar calendar, Diwali falls either in October or November each year, with main celebrations taking place on the third day.

The festival of lights will be celebrated on November 15th, 2020 in most parts of India, except certain states.
