This excellent well written book tries to bridge the philosophies of the East and West. In this detailed study, the author, Sundara Bharadwaj succinctly pinpoints some very important points in Thoreau's writings. These include how the American Transcendentalists, of which Thoreau, along with his famous mentor Ralph Waldo Emerson, were all greatly influenced by the Hindu scriptures, particularly the Bhagavad-Gita and the Principal Upanishads. This proves how the philosophies of the East and West have always influenced each other. Henry Thoreau in Walden wrote directly of his great debt to Vedic thoughts.
